-- 「　屋久杉の模様　蓮・蓮根　」 --




屋久杉

　見ての通り、丸太の木ロ側から見ると、まるで野菜の蓮根のような蜂の巣状に無数の穴があいています。
製材した板でも写真のように輪郭がはっきりした紡錘形の穴がほどよく散らばっています。
それを業界では、通称「蓮（はす）」「蓮根（れんこん）」と呼んでいます。
これは杉をはじめ一部の樹種( カヤ、台桧等) でみられる現象で、その原因は『カサウロコタケ( 蓮根菌)』という「サルノコシカケ」の一種が寄生してできる「腐朽( 蓮根腐れ)」です。

　その模様は自然がつくり出した彫り物のようであることから珍重され、「欄間( らんま)」や「建具」に使われてきました。
「欄間」としては、人工物である「彫刻らんま」「組子らんま」とは対照的に「天然らんま」として評価されています。
屋久杉以外では、伊勢神宮(御山杉) や春日大社( 春日杉) の老木( 樹齢数百年) からも見つかっています。
